March 25: Conservation Arboriculture: Lessons from Kew Gardens: Tony Kirkham
Head of the Arboretum and Horticultural Services, Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Conservation arboriculture is an approach to tree care practice that has received an increasing amount of attention in recent years. It emphasizes the preservation of ancient and aged trees not only for aesthetics but as reservoirs of biodiversity in the form of insects and microbial life that inhabit them and become the building blocks of a healthy ecosystem. The wisdom of saving “veteran” trees as habitat and arks of biodiversity becomes apparent when arboriculture is thought of in this way. Deadwood removal becomes less important in our pruning priorities and ecosystem function becomes the priority. There are many parallels with ecological landscaping that focuses on native plant usage, water conservation, control of invasives, and preservation of biodiversity. Arborists from the United Kingdom and Kew Gardens in particular have been on the forefront of this movement and Tony’s experiences will be particularly insightful. This course carries 5.5 CEUs for ISA certified arborists. Fee: $135 (includes lunch)

March 29: The Future of Arboriculture in a Changing World: Dr. Neil Hendrickson
Director of the Northeast Research Labs, R.A. Bartlett Tree Expert Co.9 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Dr. Hendrickson will present an overview of past and current arboricultural practices and how they are evolving in light of current research on environmental stress. He will focus on the role trees play in our environment and the associated threats arising from the environmental changes like global warming that we are currently experiencing. He will help us to understand how we can continue to preserve the health and beauty of trees that are such a critical component of a sustainable, biologically diverse landscape. Dr. Hendrickson, who received his Ph.D. from the Yale School of Forestry, is nationally recognized as an expert arborist. He conducts research and provides technical support for Bartlett throughout the U.S. and internationally. This course carries 5.5 CEUs for ISA certified arborists. Fee: $135 (includes lunch)

April
April 3:
Wood Utilization and Value Recovery Workshop, Brian Knox
Administrator, Urban Hardwood Recovery Project 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.
In anticipation of the loss of large numbers of ash trees throughout the U.S. due to emerald ash borer, utilization of this valuable wood has become an important issue. Brian will share some of his discoveries in a morning lecture and an afternoon field component using a portable mill. This training will help urban foresters and tree professionals build the skills necessary to make informed decisions about how they can use these cut trees to their highest use in any given market and how to find and create higher uses and better markets. It builds on the success of the Hardwood Value Improvement Project (HVIP), a USDA Forest Service Wood Education and Research Center project that trained municipal arborist to in maximize the use of their wood by-products. This course carries 5.5 CEUs for ISA certified arborists. Fee: $125 (includes lunch)

April 4, 2013, ISA Certified Arborist, Utility Specialist, and Municipal Specialist Exam Philadelphia, PA Deadline: April 4, 2013. For more information contact Scott Sjolander at 814-333-7440 or register online at http://www.isa-arbor.com/certification/becomeCertified/examDatesAndLocations.aspx

April 12: Native Wildflower Meadows: Let’s Get Real Larry Weaner
Principal, Larry Weaner Landscape Design Associates 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Demand for native meadows, particularly as an alternative to lawn, is increasing and yet few types of landscape plantings are more misunderstood than the native wildflower meadow, with many failures resulting from inadequate planning and the use of poorly adapted plants. Far better results can be obtained when the plants and processes used reflect the ecological character of our naturally occurring meadow communities. More than one-year wonders, meadows modeled on these ecosystems can provide long-term, easily managed landscapes that harbor a myriad of wildlife and provide color and texture throughout the year. In this all-day, in-depth workshop, Larry Weaner will discuss the design, implementation, and management of native meadows, using a series of case studies featuring large and small-scale meadows as well as projects ranging in age from initial establishment to over ten years in existence. He will also illustrate how garden design principles can be used in the meadow for subtle visual effect and to create graceful transitions to more formal garden areas. Larry Weaner has been creating native landscapes since 1977. He founded Larry Weaner Landscape Associates in 1982 and has gained a national reputation for combining ecological restoration with the traditions of garden design. This course carries 5.5 CEUs for ISA certified arborists and 6 CEUs for PA landscape architects. Fee: $135 (including lunch)

April 17: Up By Roots: Healthy Soils and Trees in the Built Environment
James Urban FASLA and author, “Up By Roots” 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Landscape architects and other site designers make decisions that impact soil, often with little understanding of critical scientific principles. In his book “Up By Roots”, James Urban, FASLA, presents fundamental soil principles and solutions to urban soil problems in a manner designed for people with little to no soils training using common language and a distillation of complex soil principles. This workshop will begin with an introduction of the three basic soil properties, physical, chemical, and biological and how they interrelate and support plant growth. The differences between urban and natural soil will be explained and soil assessment methods for both undisturbed and disturbed urban soil will be taught. The workshop will conclude with basic solutions to common urban soil problems. This course carries 5.5 CEUs for ISA certified arborists and 6 CEUs for PA landscape architects.Fee: $135 (including lunch)

April 19: New Field Techniques for Tree Evaluation: Jerry Bond
Consulting Urban Forester, Urban Forestry LLC 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Jerry will explain new field protocols for obtaining quick and reliable estimates of tree condition and tree load potential. The morning session will examine an estimating method that uses six defined parameters to determine tree condition. This method will then be practiced in an outdoor exercise. After lunch, we will consider tree load, a topic important for risk assessment. Participants will learn an easy technique to determine the load potential for trees and their parts. An outdoor exercise will put this knowledge into practice and will be followed by a discussion of actual case studies. Jerry Bond, Ph.D., is a consulting urban forester with Urban Forestry LLC. This course carries 5.5 CEUs for ISA certified arborists. Fee: $135 (includes lunch)

Restoration Manager, Friends of High School Park 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Shrubs are an integral part of any successful landscape. But often landscape professionals plant only common varieties. This course will help you add to the palette of shrubs that you currently recommend to clients. The focus will be on shrubs that grow well in this area. Students will learn shrub identification skills through an indoor illustrated lecture and an outdoor lab session in the living collection of the Arboretum where you will see examples of many of these species. We will discuss their cultural requirements, seasons of interest, and how to successfully use them in the landscape. Consideration will be given to how to best combine shrubs to create communities of plants that are self-sustaining.
